Replacing a Well Pump — What the Job Involves and What Drives the Price

Replacing a submersible pump means removing everything hanging in the well, and that is what the job is.

What comes out

The pump and motor.

The drop pipe — every foot of it between the pump and the pitless adapter.

The wire, run the same distance.

The safety rope, where one is fitted.

The check valve or valves.

All of it comes up together, usually with a truck-mounted hoist, which is why this is not a job done with a ladder and a friend.

What gets replaced with it

The pump, obviously.

The wire, usually, because it is the same age as the pump and replacing it later means pulling everything again.

The drop pipe, where it is old galvanised or where the plastic has become brittle.

The check valve.

The pitless adapter or the well seal, if damaged.

The wellhead brought up to current requirements, which frequently means a proper sanitary cap.

A contractor replacing the pump alone and leaving forty-year-old wire in the hole is saving the customer money today and guaranteeing a second visit.

What drives the cost

Depth, more than anything. Pipe and wire are priced per foot, and a deeper well takes longer to pull and reassemble.

Access. A wellhead a long way from where the truck can park, up a slope, or through trees.

Pump size, in horsepower and flow.

Whether the drop pipe is reused or replaced.

Emergency or scheduled, since a failure on a Sunday costs differently from a planned replacement.

Whether anything is stuck, which happens with old galvanised pipe and with wells that have accumulated scale.

Before pulling anything

A competent contractor rules out the cheaper causes first, and it is reasonable to ask that they do:

A tripped breaker or a failed capacitor in the control box.

A failed pressure switch, or its sensing tube blocked.

A waterlogged pressure tank, which produces symptoms easily mistaken for a failing pump.

A failed check valve.

A well drawn down seasonally, which is not an equipment fault at all.

The diagnosis is made with an amp reading at the control box and a level measurement in the well, and both are done before the truck sets up.

Extending the life of the next one

Correct pressure tank precharge, checked annually. Short cycling from a waterlogged tank is the leading cause of premature pump failure, and the check takes fifteen minutes.

A tank sized for adequate drawdown, so the pump runs longer and starts less.

Not oversizing the pump against the well's yield, which is what causes it to draw down and run dry.

Surge protection, on a long service run.

A constant pressure controller, which starts the pump gently and removes cycling as a failure mode. It costs more and, on a deep well where the replacement is a major job, it is worth weighing.

The paperwork worth keeping

The well log — depth, casing, static level, tested yield. The pump's model, horsepower and setting depth. The wire size and the drop pipe material.

A contractor arriving to a failure works far faster with those figures than without them, and having them is the difference between a diagnosis and an exploration.

Disinfect afterwards

Anything that opens a well introduces the possibility of contamination.

Shock chlorination after pump work, followed by a bacterial test once the chlorine has flushed through, is standard practice and it is sometimes skipped.

Ask whether it is included, and test the water afterwards regardless.

Jet pumps are different

A jet pump sits above ground, and replacing one is a plumbing job rather than a well job — no hoist, no pulling, and a fraction of the labour.

That is the one advantage of a jet pump over a submersible, and it is why shallow wells with above-ground pumps are cheaper to keep even though the pumps are less efficient and shorter-lived.
